Photos of cardamom, coffe,
eggs and hardworking Guatemalans
Everywhere in Guatemala you meet hardworking people at all ages
- starting from small children who often
spend most of the day doing domestic labour such as carrying firewood,
fetching water etc. Schooling is too often an inaccesible luxury, especially
for girls in poor families.
In fact more than 80 percent of the
population live in poverty - and about
half
of these
in extreme
poverty,
which
means that they have no more than a dollar a day for each family
member.
Guatemala is definitely a country that, in order to improve living
conditions for the vast majority, needs to give rise to strong labour
unions.
Labour unions have however been systematically oppressed by successive
military goverments
that were supported by the Unites
States until the ninety eighties.
Even though democracy is starting to see the light, speaking the
course of the workers may still be an extremely dangerous activity
in this long tormented country.
