Photos of turtles and miskito indian fishermen Europix photographer Ole Loumann was on an exiting mission to Eastern Nicaragua, where he followed some local fishermen that took off to catch a bunch of the big green turtles in the Atlantic Ocean. Turtles - protected species, but not in Eastern Nicaragua In Costa Ricas Tortugero Nacional park, they make a virtue of protecting the heavily endangered Turtles, and they make good money showing them to the tourists. But if you travel just af few hundred kilometers to the the North - to the Garífuna and Miskito Indian Communities on the East Coast of Nicaragua they kill and eat all the turtles they can catch. It has been like that for centuries. Already the British pirates that ravaged the coast three centuries ago found out that turtes was the perfect food to carry onboard a ship. If you put the turtle on it´s back, it can´t move and it can stay alive for weeks. Very convenient when your ship is on the run. You don´t need to go ashore and you certainly do not need a refrigerator. The only thing is that the animal suffers tremendously. And it continues to suffer in Nicaragua where the Miskito Indians eat turtle like we in the western world eat burgers. But do they really need to kill them in such a cruel manner?
